Recently, there is considerable interest in health maintenance in Japan.
Although many guidelines for a “well-balanced diet” or “desirable lifestyle”
have been formulated, the results of many surveys show that application
of them is difficult in practice. When regarding the interaction between
health problems and dietary habits, we think it is necessary to consider
many other factors such as home factors (family) and social factors (job
or school) and to analyze their interrelationships from various perspectives.
We investigated many different life stages, studying not only diet and
dietary habits but personality, behavior, parents and family, school and
work. Based on these investigations, our goal is to create personalized
health education programs including dietary education.

Nutrition of Vitamin B12 |

In 1926, VitaminB12 (B12) was discovered in the liver as a treatment factor
for pernicious anemia. Mostly, B12 is present in animal products but not
in vegetables. Therefore, in long-term adherents of a strict, uncooked
vegan diet, young dieters and old persons whose intake of animal food is
decreased, the B12 status is often compromised. In our studies we have
been searching for a natural vegetable source of B12, as well as investigating
problems caused by blending different nutrients in high concentrations
in dietary supplements, as well as the significance of feces of herbivorous
animals as resources for B12 and developing a useful method for determination
of B12. |

Structure, Function, and Evolution of Tandem Repeats in Proteins |

Tandem repeats occur in 14% of all proteins. The repeat unit lengths range
from a single amino acid to more than 100 residues and the repeat number
is sometimes over 100. Understanding the structures, functions, and evolution
of these repeats is a significant goal in both proteomics and genomics.
From twenty years ago we have studied the structure, function and evolution
of various tandem repeats. The structures of tandem repeats including those
in the C-terminal repeat domain (CTD) of the largest subunit of RNA polymerase
II and ice nucleation protein were studied by nuclear magnetic resonance
(NMR) circular dichroism (CD) and/or small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS).
Moreover, the sequence and structural analyses of leucine rich repeats
that are present in over 60,000 proteins were performed by bioinformatics
approach including new methods developed by us. In two recent review articles
we demonstrated that there are two classes of tandem repeats in proteins
-those with globular structures and those without. The globular can be
divided into two subclasses. In one the repeat units form a helix or solenoid;
examples include ankyrin, HEAT, leucine rich repeat, and armadillo. In
the other the domains are relatively stable when isolated; they do not
form a helix in the multidomain protein. Examples include zinc-fingers,
EF-hands, WD repeats, and SUSHI domain (SCR repeat). The non-globular repeats
are also found in two groups -those that form stable helices, like collagen,
and those whose structures are flexible or inherently disordered, for example
polyglutamine (polyGln). |

Although the harmful effect of smoking became widely come to public attention, smoking rates of parents in the child-raising remains still high and it is fearful about secondhand smoking influence on child to grow. While children are hospitalized, we support their parents and family to promote their sense of well-being by encouraging them to give up smoking. |

situation or take an advantage of that information very well, there is
not effective support given for parents to encourage them to give up smoking
in the home or separate the smoking area. We have evaluated a tactics to
help parents stop smoking and acknowledged the need for child-nursing practitioners
to intervene in helping parents to give up smoking while we have studied
to develop care guideline concerning to quitting smoking of parents in
a sick-child care. |

It is reported in Europe and America that the occupation of musicians is similar to that of athletes in terms of overworking their physical and mental capacities, and that many of them suffer from physical lesion and psychological stress. It was also apparent from our investigation done on the Japanese symphony orchestra members that 70% or more had some forms of Playing Related Musculoskeletal Disorder (PRMD). This is a result of long hours of practice, concentrating only on developing the playing techniques from early childhood. It is our wish to do a basic research to find ways of conditioning these musicians to be able to continue their performance activities, to improve their existing functional lesion, and to examine effective rehabilitation programs for them. |

Utility of prosthetic limb of upper limb amputees - “Striving for utilization of artificial arms in daily activities “The utilization rate of functional upper limb prosthesis of upper limb amputees for daily activity is rather low at about 20%. From our research, we have found the following problems with regards to the use of “Hook” type artificial hand. 1. It has no sensory feedback mechanism and is difficult to reproduce physiological movements. 2. It is made of metal and the weight gives discomfort to users. 3. Operation is difficult since the source of power is gained from wire operation, requiring much strength in the initial movement. Although there are high performance prosthetic limbs such as electromyo prosthesis, the system to issue these limbs to amputees is still very limited.
We will examine the “Hook” type prosthetic limbs, in current use or to be considered for renewal use, in terms of the wire power source; the feedback control mechanism; and its material, including weight, color, and design. |

Developmental care is an approach to help High-risk Infants (premature baby, Low birth weight infant and infant with developmental disease). Specifically this care is performed by reducing external stress (excess light and sound stimuli) as much as possible and providing appropriate care according to infants’ response. However, infants need to adjust themselves to an external environment little by little as they grow, thus we have performed early interventional therapeutic exercise for infants and evaluated its effect by assessing their growth for the long term. |
