Update: April 1, 2009 1 Medical Exchanges with the Overseas universities. Sapporo Medical University has actively been promoting mutual exchange programs with overseas countries whose climate and living conditions are similar to those of Hokkaido in order to improve the health and welfare of people living in these regions. Since 1977, the University has established mutual medical exchange programs with universities in Finland, Canada, China and the United States. Additionally, Jiamusi University of China joined the exchange programs in 2008. And China Medical University has joined the exchange of students programs in 2009.
◆Faculty Member Exchange Since the establishment of the medical exchange programs with the above universities, many faculty members, who have had the opportunity to visit the above institutions, have shared scientific knowledge, and conducted joint research. About 300 faculty members visited each other's institutions by March, 2008. Sapporo Medical University has been sending students to “the English Language and Cultural Seminar” and to “clinical lecture”. 【Plans for this year】
◆Overseas Exchange Clinical Training for Undergraduate Students Sapporo Medical University and China Medical University are starting a new exchange program for undergraduate students in 2009. Students visit each others’ university for two weeks, during which they attend clinical lectures. Both universities’ students visit each other’s university and they take the clinical training during two weeks. ◆Short-term study abroad for a graduate student/research (clinical) fellow Sapporo Medical University started a new support program for a graduate student / research (clinical) fellow in 2008. This program supports a part of the student’s expenses needed for short-term study abroad (one or three months).
Through JICA and other international organizations, Sapporo Medical University has accepted many foreign health professionals and has sent our faculty members to developing countries. Sapporo Medical University has been accepting Russian doctors from Sakhalin from 1990, supported by public donations. 3 System of International Medical Exchanges The Committee of International Medical Exchanges is an advisory board for the President of Sapporo Medical University, and promotes international medical exchanges between Sapporo Medical University and institutions around the world. The Division of International Affairs and Medical Exchanges carries out an executive function of dealing with matters related to general international affairs in addition to putting decisions made by the committee into effect. 〔Committee for International Medical Exchange〕
